Day 2 Miles
577.4
Winslow, AZ to Amarillo, TX
Some great Route 66 scenery. I could not help repeating over and over “Oh wow, ok… THIS is what inspired ‘Radiator Springs’ from Pixar’s ‘Cars’”.
We hit some heavy rain and lightning during the evening - Erik hydroplaned a bit and learned to slow down.
Erik dropped his wife off at the Miami airport this morning.
We have over 6,000 miles behind us now. 2 of the 4 corners have been visited.
Now making our way to Washington state. First through Atlanta, GA.
4 Corners USA Tour check-in #2 Key West, Florida - The most Southeastern part of the US.
I am very glad my wife was able to join us for this part of the tour. She is happy to be done with her part of the tour.
Enjoying lunch and a rest break at Willie T’s in Key West, FL
Day 11 Miles
798.9 miles!
Yes, this is a record breaking day for me on the trip - beating out the long haul we did from Texas to St. Louis.
The good news is that even though I covered more miles, I was able to do it more efficiently and checked into my hotel shortly after 11pm (opposed to 2am like St. Louis).
My wife flew out and met me in the Raliegh, NC area to join me for the Key West, FL corner “check-in”. This was her first day riding with me and she sure is feeling the wear on the body (particularly the rear end) after riding from morning to night.
Looking forward to hitting the Florida Keys tomorrow!
Note: These are my miles since I was separated from the group as I broke away to meet up with my wife and visit with friends. Others in the group will have different miles/end points for this day.
Miami
We are all in Miami (or the greater Miami area).
Tomorrow we will ride to Key West and “check-in” to our 2nd of the 4 “corners”.
We will then ride back up to the Miami area and stay there another night before making our way to Washington state.
This will be the first time since the trip started that I will get to sleep in the same bed two nights in a row. And as an added bonus my wife is in that bed with me as she flew to the East coast to meet up with me and do the Florida Keys check-in.
It will be nice to not have to pack up my bike in the morning.
Stopped for a Georgia peach. De-lish.
Next stop Florida.
Rolled through DC like a thief in the night. After NYC sucked most of my day away it seemed like stopping near DC was a good choice. Thankfully I have some good friends Nathan and Valerie who let me crash at their home and do some much needed laundry. Before going to their place I had to snap a photo of my bike at the Washington Monument.
Passing through New York state on the way to checkpoint #2 in Florida I could not resist stopping by New York City. I has two objectives for my visit. To ride the Brooklyn Bridge and to take a photo of my bike with the Statue of Liberty in it. I did accomplish my goals, but doing them turned out to be a total time sucker and killed my MAIN objective of the day which was to get to North Carolina to visit with friends and meet up with my wife who flew there this week so she could ride to Florida with me on my bike. Sorry babe, we’ll hook up tomorrow.
